Open vs closed damper for creosote buildup, which way do you lean?

I've been testing something for the last 2 weeks on a few jobs around Portland. Leaving the damper cracked open about an inch after the fire dies lets the chimney dry out faster and I measured less creosote crust on the next sweep. But a buddy of mine swears by closing it fully to trap heat and keep the flue warmer overnight, says it stops the acidic condensation from forming. Both seem to work for different setups, my older clay liner took the closed route fine. Got any strong opinions on this, or is it all about the liner type?
