Overheard a guy at the supply house say he's skipping firebox repairs for 'next season'
I was grabbing some refractory cement yesterday in Columbus and heard a sweeper tell his buddy he's patching a cracked firebox with just mortar to get through winter. He said 'it'll hold til spring' and laughed it off. How do you even respond to that without starting a fight?

Jeez, some guys just love playing with fire literally. Had a buddy try that same shortcut on his own fireplace and the whole wall ended up smelling like smoke for two months straight.

Your buddy got off easy honestly. My cousin tried that same thing with their fireplace insert and the smoke damage migrated all the way into their bedroom closet. Clothes smelled like campfire for weeks. They tried ozone machines, vinegar bowls, even some shop trick with baking soda. Nothing touched it. Ended up having to rip out the drywall and insulation in that whole section of wall. That little shortcut probably cost them like 800 bucks and a weekend of their life. Some lessons just have to be learned the hard way I guess.

Jumping in here @ben486... fixing a smoky wall smell is a nightmare. Had a buddy try the same shortcut and ended up having to repaint the whole ceiling. Took him two cans of that special primer and a lot of cussing. Not worth the hassle honestly.
