Spent 4 hours chasing a draft that was just a loose damper

Old house in Boston, customer said smoke was backing up. I checked the flue, the cap, even ran a camera. Turned out the damper was rattling open just enough to mess with the seal. Took way longer than it shouldve. Anyone else have a simple thing eat up half a day?

Oh man, I feel this one in my bones! Spent a whole afternoon once on a boiler that kept short cycling. Customer was ready to buy a whole new unit. Turned out it was just a loose wire on the limit switch. Five minute fix, took me four hours to find it.

And I actually read somewhere that something like 40% of service calls end up being something simple like that. Its wild how easy it is to overthink these things when youve been staring at a problem too long. I had a similar one years ago where a customer thought their furnace was dying and it was just a clogged air filter that somehow got past my initial check. Sometimes you just need to walk away for ten minutes and come back fresh, but who has time for that on a busy day.
