The worst creosote I've seen in years locked up my brushes.

I was at a house built in the 1920s. The chimney was PACKED with creosote. My brushes got stuck twice. It took me three extra hours to finish. I'm still finding black dust in my hair.

Man, that sounds brutal. Creosote buildup is no joke. It's a perfect example of how we ignore maintenance until it's a crisis.

But I see it differently. Not everyone has the cash for regular chimney sweeps, and they might not know how bad it can get. @the_emery, calling it a crisis from ignoring stuff misses that some people are just trying to get by. Old houses have so many issues, and creosote isn't always the first thing on your list. It's more about hard choices than dumb habits.

See that same mindset everywhere. People skip oil changes until the engine seizes, ignore a small roof leak until the ceiling collapses. It's always cheaper to deal with it early, but everyone puts it off. I see it with clients who don't keep their books straight all year, then panic at tax time. That creosote is just the chimney version of a much bigger, dumber habit.
