Thought chimney brushes were a scam until I tried the poly one from that supply house in Dayton
I always used the wire brushes because that's what my dad used and they worked fine, so when the guy at the counter in Dayton pushed me toward a poly brush I figured he was just trying to move slow inventory. I finally bought one 3 months ago for a job with a badly glazed flue and it pulled so much more soot out than my wire brush on the same chimney. My sweep time dropped from about 50 minutes to 35 on a standard masonry flue and the homeowner even commented that there was less dust in the room after. The bristles haven't splayed out yet either, and I've run it on maybe 40 jobs since. Now I'm wondering what else I brushed off as a sales pitch that actually works. Has anyone tried the flat wire ones for really stubborn creosote or do you just switch to a chemical treatment at that point?
