Vent: This old-timer told me to always use a wire brush on cast iron flues
Swore by it for 3 months until I gouged a liner so bad the homeowner called me back after 20 fires, how do you guys even tell what's safe to scrub?

That bit about "how do you guys even tell what's safe to scrub" is the real question. I stick to poly pads on stainless liners now, and only use wire on the heavy cast collars before they connect. Saves me from those callbacks and keeps the liner surface smooth every time.

Wait, you're seriously using poly pads on stainless liners? That's wild, I would've thought those would scratch the hell out of them.
