Warning: I saw a chimney go from clean to clogged in 3 months after a DIY creosote log
Used to sweep a house every spring for this guy in Denver. Customer decided to try one of those chemical logs instead of calling me last fall. Went back this week to do his annual and the flue was packed with this flaky, sticky black stuff. Took me twice as long to scrape it out. He said he used the log like the box said. Anyone else seeing these things cause more buildup than they fix?

Reminds me of those fuel additives that claim to clean your engine but just gunk it up worse.

Oh man, that's rough. A buddy of mine used one of those logs in his own house and swore it was working great, but when he had his chimney inspected six months later, the guy said the same thing - this weird, sticky buildup everywhere. He ended up needing a professional cleaning anyway, so basically he just threw twenty bucks down the drain plus made the mess worse. I mean, it's wild how those things seem to just turn the creosote into a different, harder to remove form instead of actually getting rid of it. Makes you wonder if they're even tested properly before they hit the shelves.
