An old timer told me to stop babying my roughing passes

I was running a job in a 4140 block at the shop and taking like .030 per pass because I was nervous about chatter. This guy with 30 years experience walked over and said "crank it up or the tool will just rub and work harden it." I bumped it to .150 and the cycle time dropped by 40 percent. Anybody else get that advice early on and wish they listened sooner?

Yeah that .030 was just polishing it, once you load up the cut it cuts clean.

My Harbor Freight bandsaw needed about that much on the guide blocks too. Once I got it set right it stopped wandering like a drunk at a bar.
