Caught a 0.015 inch taper on a shaft job in Wichita before the inspector did
Was running a batch of 40 stainless shafts on the old lathe in Wichita last Tuesday and noticed the finish looked a little off on the last few. Checked with a mic and saw a 0.015 taper across the length, so I stopped the run and pulled the tailstock apart. The center was worn and had about 0.003 runout, which was pushing the whole cut off. Swapped in a new live center, re-indicated everything, and ran the last 12 parts dead on, so the inspector passed the whole batch. Has anyone else had a tailstock center sneak up on them like that?
