Finally hit 0.0005" on a bearing bore after 6 months of scrapping parts
Six months ago I got moved to the bore grinder at our shop in Gary and I was scrapping about 1 in 5 parts, mostly from feeding too fast on the finish pass. Last Thursday I ran a batch of 40 bearing housings and held 0.0005" on every single one with zero scrap, and my lead checked them all twice because he didn't believe it. Anybody got a go-to routine for keeping size consistent once you're cutting that close, or do you just babysit the wheel and pray?
Six months of eating scrap on the finish pass, man I feel that. I ran a run of 32 inner races back in March and the thing that finally fixed my size drift was letting the wheel spark out completely before I pulled back, like a full 8 to 10 seconds of just sitting there with zero infeed, because the wheel keeps cutting a hair after you stop feeding. Also I dress way lighter now, .0002 to .0003 per pass instead of hogging it, and I check the first three parts with a mic that's been sitting in the same room all shift so the temp doesn't mess with me. Babysitting still happens, but the spark out alone cut my creeper parts way down.
