I swore by my old way of setting up a boring bar until last Tuesday

Honestly, I always set the bar dead center in the holder and just went for it, thinking any offset would cause chatter. My buddy in the next bay over saw me fighting a 4140 part and said, 'Try putting a 0.001 shim under one side of the bar to tilt it.' I thought he was nuts, but after 30 minutes of bad finish, I gave it a shot. Ngl, the cut was way quieter and the finish looked like glass. Has anyone else used a tiny intentional misalignment like that on deep boring ops? What's your go-to trick?

Yeah, that 0.001 shim trick is a lifesaver for chatter. I've found a slight tilt like that can actually help the chip flow away better on deep bores. Sometimes I'll even use a feeler gauge to try a 0.002 offset if the bar is really long. It changes the contact point just enough to kill the vibration.

So you just discovered tool geometry by accident?
