Just realized comparing HSS vs carbide on a big job really opened my eyes
I had to run 300 linear feet of .125 aluminum channel last week and split the job between my old HSS end mills and some new carbide ones I picked up. The carbide cut through like butter, no chatter at all even at 12k rpm, and I only had to change tools twice compared to six times with HSS. Surface finish was night and day smoother on the carbide passes too. Has anyone else found a specific tool material that just clicks for certain jobs?

Man, did you notice a big difference in how the machine sounded too? I ran a similar job with some 6061 plate and the carbide was just so much quieter, it kind of freaked me out at first. I had the same experience with the tool changes, I think I only swapped once for the whole run instead of like four or five times with HSS. Maybe it's just me but the finish on the carbide parts was way cleaner, almost no burrs to clean up after.
