My foreman swore by coolant for tapping, last Tuesday proved him wrong

Foreman Bob in Toledo told me to always use coolant when hand tapping 3/8-16 holes in aluminum, so I did and the tap snapped clean off in the third hole. Then I tried it dry with a spiral flute tap and it cut like butter, no chatter, no break. Any other old schoolers out there that swear by coolant but got burned the same way?
