PSA: Found out my spindle speed was off by 300 RPM for almost a year

I was reading a Haas white paper last week and decided to double check my machine. Used a laser tachometer and found my spindle was running at 7200 RPM instead of the 7500 I had dialed in. Has anyone else checked their spindle speed after a long time?

That 300 RPM drop is pretty significant especially if you're doing finish passes. Did you notice any change in surface quality or tool wear over that year, or did it just fly under the radar completely?

My 2008 Bridgeport dropped about 250 RPM over two years... never saw any real difference in the finish on aluminum or steel. Tool wear seemed about the same too, just had to bump up the speed on the VFD to get back to where I was. It was one of those things you'd never notice unless you actually clocked it with a tach.
