Rant: Old timer told me to trust my ears over the readout

Had a guy in Cleveland, must've been 70, watch me chase a 0.002" offset for an hour. He finally said, 'Son, the machine tells you where it is, not where it should be.' He walked over, nudged the feed override down 15%, and the chatter vanished. I was so stuck on the numbers I forgot the sound of a bad cut. Anyone else ever get saved by a veteran's gut call that made no sense on paper?

Did you check the spindle bearings after that?
