Retired toolmaker's advice about spindle warmup saved my bearings

Old Dave from the shop in Toledo told me to let the spindle spin at 500 rpm for 15 minutes before any heavy cut, I thought he was just wasting time, but after 6 months of ignoring him I pulled the head and found 3 scored bearings, has anyone else found a slow warmup actually matters or is my machine just old junk?

Man, that's a rough way to learn that lesson. Old Dave probably saved you a ton of money down the road, those bearings aren't cheap to replace. Did you catch it before any real damage to the spindle itself?
