Roughing feeds and speeds, old timer told me I'm overthinking it
I was programming a 6061 plate job last week for a local shop in Dayton and an old timer walked over, watched my toolpath for a minute, then said I'm running 30% slower than I need to because I trust the calculator over the sound of the cut. He cranked the feed up on my 1/2 inch end mill and it screamed for a second then settled in smooth, no chatter, and the finish was better than my last three parts. Now I'm torn, do you guys push feeds until it sounds scary or stick with the math, and has anyone else had a veteran just rewrite their whole approach on the fly?
