Shoutout to the lead who told me to stop running my roughing end mill so hot
About 8 months back the lead at our plant in Akron told me my tool life was garbage because I was pushing the feed on 4140 and cooking the corners off my roughers every 90 minutes. I got mad at first, because I'd run it that way at my last job and nobody said a word. He grabbed a dial indicator and showed me my spindle load was pegging at 105% on every deep pass, which meant I was rubbing the cutter instead of cutting. So I dropped the feed about 20% and bumped the speed a little, and now I get a full 8 hour run out of one rougher instead of swapping inserts 4 times a shift. My cycle time went up maybe 40 seconds a part, but the tooling bill went down and I'm not stopping to index all night. Curious if any of you run 4140 hotter on purpose and get away with it, or is that just a myth from the old timers.
