Spent 4 hours chasing a .001 offset that was actually a loose collet

Was dialing in a tight tolerance part on our Haas VF2 last week. Kept seeing the finish cut come in .001 over on one side. Adjusted offsets like 7 times before I realized the collet nut was barely a quarter turn loose. Felt like an idiot. Anyone else waste hours on a problem that was just physical loose hardware?

People might say that's a collet issue but really it's a process issue. If you had checked your work piece runout before cutting you would have found the loose collet in about 30 seconds. Chasing offsets for four hours means you skipped the basic troubleshooting steps. Tightening down all your tooling should be step one before you ever touch the offsets page. The machine is telling you something is wrong physically and you're trying to fix it with numbers. Next time walk through the whole setup checklist before you blame the program or the offset.

Last time I had a runout issue I just grabbed my indicator and checked the work piece before even hitting the green button. Saved me like an hour of messing with offsets that wouldn't have fixed anything anyway. Honestly feels like half the problems in this trade come from skipping the 30 second checks.
