Unpopular take: I actually think newer CNC machines lose some precision when they auto-compensate for tool wear too much.

Saw a study from a 2023 manufacturing expo that claimed adaptive control algorithms introduce a 0.002 inch deviation on average over a 30-piece run, which is wild because my old manual mill from the 90s holds tighter than that without any software helping out. Has anyone else noticed similar drift on their Haas or Mazak machines?

Oh come on, is a 0.002 inch deviation really going to ruin your day? I've seen guys hit worse than that just from setting their tool height offset wrong on a good day. Those algorithms are meant to keep things consistent over a long run, not match your ancient manual mill's dead-nuts repeatability on a single part. Maybe the real issue is people expecting robot-level perfection from a machine that's basically making guesses in real time.

Basically making guesses in real time" - that's the part I keep coming back to. So if the algorithm is just guessing, why would anyone trust it for anything tighter than +/- 0.005? What's the actual success rate on those long runs versus just doing it manually?
