Went back to conventional toolpaths after 5 years of trochoidal only

I read a post on a machining forum about tool wear data from a shop in Ohio that compared trochoidal vs conventional paths on the same 4140 job. The numbers showed conventional actually won on cycle time by 12% when the tool diameter to flute length ratio was under 1:3. I ran my own test last month with a 1/2 inch end mill and sure enough, same result. My old foreman always swore by trochoidal for everything, but now I'm wondering how much time I've wasted. Has anyone else found cases where the fancy modern approach is worse than the old school way?
