A guy in my Discord server told me I was "debugging with my eyes closed" and he was right
I have been learning Python on and off for about 5 months now, mostly through free YouTube videos and messing around with small scripts. Last week I wrote a little program to sort my movie collection and it kept crashing on one file, so I did what I always do, which is scroll through the code line by line and guess where the problem was. After maybe 40 minutes of that I posted a screenshot in a beginner Discord server and this guy named Marcus replied with "you're debugging with your eyes closed, just print stuff." I had heard of print statements before but I always thought they were for showing output to users, not for finding bugs. He told me to put a print line before every loop and after every variable assignment so I could actually watch the values instead of guessing. It felt dumb and messy at first, but within 10 minutes I found the issue, my list was a string instead of a list of strings because I forgot to split it. Now I literally put print statements everywhere when something breaks, and I delete them after. How do you all track down bugs when you have no idea where to start?
