Found out git commit messages have a 72 character hard limit after 3 years of typing novels
Was scrolling through the git documentation last night and stumbled on that 50/72 rule for subject and body lines, and now I have to go back and rewrite every single one of my messy commit logs from my first project.

Oh man, I feel your pain. When I first got into version control I was writing paragraphs in my commits too. I just started using a simple template in my git config that reminds me to keep the subject under 50 characters and it saved me a lot of headaches. The body can still be as long as you want, just keep that first line short and sweet.

Had a buddy who used to write novels in his commit messages. His history looked like a Stack Overflow answer on every single line. Finally just told him to pretend he's sending a text to his future self - keep it short, save the details for later.

Wait, isn't the subject line supposed to be 50 characters not words?
