My old boss told me to learn C first, back in 2012, and I'm glad I didn't listen.
He said it built character and real understanding, but I started with Python instead and built my first little web scraper in a weekend. That quick win kept me going when the harder stuff got frustrating later on. What's the one piece of starter advice you ignored that worked out for you?

My guitar teacher said to start with scales, but I just learned songs.

Yeah my uncle told me to start with assembly... glad I just made a dumb little website instead. Sometimes the boring advice just kills the fun before you even start.

I read somewhere that the best way to learn coding or music is to just pick something you actually want to make or play, you know? The "start with assembly" or "start with scales" crowd means well, but it's like telling someone to memorize the dictionary before they can write a sentence. I remember a study about kids learning guitar who picked songs they loved vs. those who drilled scales first. The song-learners stuck with it way longer, just like your dumb little website probably taught you more about HTML and CSS than any boring tutorial ever could.
