Thought coding bootcamps were a cash grab after my friend wasted 5 grand in 2019

My buddy signed up for a 12 week JavaScript bootcamp and ended up still not getting a job, so I wrote them off completely. Last month I tried a free 2 day Python workshop at a local library and built a script that actually helped at work. Has anyone else found that the free or cheap stuff can sometimes be way better than the expensive programs?

Free workshops and short classes beat expensive bootcamps nine times out of ten.

Dang, "nine times out of ten" - that's a bold call from @derek99 but honestly, I'm kind of nodding along. I mean, my own experience lines up with that, where I spent like $200 on a Coursera course and it taught me more than a buddy's $8,000 bootcamp did for him. The free stuff forces you to actually problem-solve instead of just following along with a script, you know? It's wild how a local library workshop or a YouTube playlist can sometimes hit harder than those fancy programs. Maybe if bootcamps had more real world projects and less hype, they'd be worth the price tag. But for now, I'm with Derek on this one.
