Warning: my first npm install broke my whole project in 3 minutes

I ran npm install on a fresh React app last night and it silently overwrote my package.json with 400+ dependency versions, then the build just refused to start. Turns out you need to commit that file before installing anything, has anyone else hit this exact wall starting out?
