A barista in Portland showed me the bloom pour and my french press has been sitting in the cabinet since
I was at a small shop on Alberta St in Portland two weeks ago and the barista let me watch her do a pour over. She poured just a little water over the grounds, waited 30 seconds while they puffed up, then did the rest in slow circles. I tried it at home the next morning with my old drip cone and the cup tasted way less bitter, like I could actually pick out a chocolate note instead of just hot brown water. Now I keep a kettle at 200 degrees and a timer on my phone, which sounds fussy but takes the same 4 minutes as before. Is a gooseneck kettle actually worth it or can I get away with my regular one?
Heard a guy on a coffee podcast say the gooseneck mostly helps with control, not taste, so a regular kettle gets you 90 percent there. Save the money unless you really get into it.
