Switched from a blade grinder to a hand burr grinder and my French press went from bitter mud to actually sweet in about 2 weeks
I was ready to give up on my French press because every cup came out gritty and bitter no matter what ratio I used. Bought a Hario hand grinder for around $40 two weeks back and started using a coarse setting, about 30 clicks, and the same beans suddenly tasted sweet instead of burnt. The big thing was the even grind size, my old blade grinder was leaving powder mixed with chunks which over-extracted the fine stuff. Anyone else notice a huge jump like this just from switching grinders, or did I just get lucky with the setting?
Wait, 30 clicks? How did you even land on that number, was it just trial and error or did you count from zero? I'm asking because I've got a hand grinder sitting in a drawer and I've been doing like 20 clicks for French press, which might explain why mine still comes out a little harsh. Did you change anything else at the same time, like water temp or how long you let it sit before pressing? Because if you dropped the temp or cut the steep time while also fixing the grind, it's hard to know which one actually did the heavy lifting. And what beans are you using, like a light roast or something darker? I only ask because a sweet cup from a coarse grind makes more sense with certain roasts than others.
