Swore off the French press for 3 years, then my neighbor in Omaha made me a cup that shut me up
Back in 2021 I tried a French press twice and both times I got a mug full of sludge that felt like drinking wet sand, so I boxed it up and went back to my drip maker for the next 3 years. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, my neighbor Dale in Omaha invited me over for breakfast and handed me a cup that was clean and rich with zero grit at the bottom. I asked what machine he used and he just pointed at the same press I had sitting in my basement, then told me his trick is a coarse grind about the size of sea salt and a slow 4 minute steep. He also said to press the plunger down about an inch and stop, then just pour gently instead of shoving it all the way. I tried it at home the next morning and the difference was wild, no silt at all and way more flavor than my drip pot ever gave me. Now the press lives on my counter full time and the drip maker is the one in the basement. What grind size are you all running, because I feel like I got lucky on my first try and want to lock it in?
Had the same sludge problem in 2021 and gave up on mine too, so I get the frustration. Sea salt size is the sweet spot for me as well, though I go a notch finer if the beans are a lighter roast.
