Almost tossed a $40 bag of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe because my pour-over was channeling like crazy for weeks

I was in my kitchen in Columbus last Tuesday after my third failed brew, and finally realized my grinder burrs were loose-tightened them with a hex key and got the smoothest cup I've had in months, anyone else ever chase a problem that was staring them in the face?

Yeah I read something about this on a coffee forum a while back. Someone said loose burrs can cause all sorts of weird extraction issues and nobody thinks to check them first. Glad you got it sorted, must've been frustrating.

See I'm not totally sold on that being the first thing to check though. Most people overthink their burrs when actually it's usually a dosing or distribution problem causing weird shots. Loose burrs definitely happen but it's pretty rare compared to just bad puck prep or stale beans. I've pulled plenty of amazing shots on grinders that were a little out of alignment and honestly couldn't tell a massive difference. Maybe I'm crazy but I feel like the burr paranoia gets blown way out of proportion for home setups.
