Just realized my $18 hand grinder was making better coffee than my $400 electric one
For two years I swore by my electric burr grinder and thought anyone using a hand grinder was just trying to look cool. Last Saturday my electric one jammed mid grind and I had no backup, so I dug out the cheap hand grinder my sister got me from a thrift store in Boise for $18. I ground 30 grams of beans with it, took about 2 minutes of cranking, and made my usual pour over. The cup was sweeter and had way more of that berry thing I could never get before. I checked the burr settings and realized my electric one was throwing a ton of fines because the burrs were worn out after 4 years of daily use. Now I'm sitting here wondering if I should even replace the electric one or just keep cranking by hand every morning. Has anyone else noticed their cheap hand grinder out performing a worn out electric one, or did I just get lucky with this thrift store find?
