My french press shattered this morning at 5:45am

Was just about to pour my first cup when the carafe cracked clean in half right on the counter, sent glass and coffee grounds all over the kitchen floor. Has anyone switched to one of those insulated steel presses and actually liked the taste?

Man, that's brutal. Nothing worse than that early morning crash before the coffee even hits your lips, right? I've been thinking about trying one of those steel presses myself, mostly because I'm sick of walking on eggshells around my glass one when I'm half awake. A buddy of mine swears by his stainless steel French press, says the coffee actually stays hot longer which is a win for those days you get distracted. I'd probably give one a shot just to avoid that glass-and-grounds mess on the floor again.

@oliver_fisher you're totally right about the steel press keeping heat longer. That's actually a bigger deal than people realize, especially when you're the type who gets pulled away mid cup. The glass ones lose heat way too fast, and then you're stuck microwaving your coffee which just ruins it. Also the peace of mind from not worrying about shattering glass is honestly worth the upgrade alone.

wait, it cracked clean IN HALF? like just... split right down the middle while sitting there? i had one of those glass ones chip on me before but never a full on explosion... that's wild. but honestly i switched to a steel one about six months ago after my second glass carafe broke and i just couldn't take it anymore. the taste's fine to me, maybe a little different at first but you get used to it quick... and yeah the heat retention is way better, my coffee stays warm for like an hour which is great when i'm running around in the morning.
