Bumped into a retired comic shop owner who changed my whole view on variant covers

He told me he watched collectors buy 5 copies of the same book back in the 90s thinking they'd be retirement funds, then watched those same boxes sell for $20 at a garage sale. Now I actually check the story before I grab the variant cover.

Owning a comic shop doesn't make you a financial expert.

Man, that hit home hard. I had a buddy who got super into the 90s speculator boom. He bought like 12 copies of X-Force #1 thinking he was gonna pay off his car with them. He kept them in those plastic bags with the cardboard backs, never even opened them. About ten years ago he tried to sell the whole lot at a convention and got offered maybe fifty bucks for everything. He told me he just left them in a box at his mom's house and she eventually threw them out. It's wild how we all thought those books were gold and now you can't give them away. That shop owner wasn't giving financial advice, he was just telling the truth about what he saw happen over and over.
