Had to pick between Marvel and DC back issues at a con last weekend

I was at a small show in Denver and found a guy selling long boxes for $5 each but you could only get one. I grabbed a Marvel box with a full run of X-Men 150-175 instead of a DC box that had a near-mint copy of Batman 400. How do you choose when the deals are that tight?

Man, you picked wrong on this one and I'll die on that hill. That Batman 400 is a grail copy for a lot of folks, and near-mint is basically impossible to find without paying serious cash. You passed on a key issue that's only going up because of the Miller cover and the whole 400 milestone thing. X-Men 150-175 are fun reads but not exactly rare, you can grab those for cheap anytime. I get the Marvel loyalty thing but when a deal like that shows up you have to think long term value, not just what you like right now. That Batman would have paid for ten of those X-Men runs if you ever wanted to sell.

Actually I just watched a video from Comic Tom last week where he broke down the top 10 keys of the last 5 years and Batman 400 was near the top of his list. He said the Miller cover alone makes it one of the most iconic Batman covers ever printed, and near-mint copies are drying up fast. I get being a Marvel guy but you gotta look at the bigger picture here. The X-Men stuff from 150 to 175 is cool but those are dollar bin finds at most cons now, seriously. Meanwhile that Batman 400 in high grade is already hitting $200+ and climbing every year. I'd rather have one monster key than a pile of mid-grade X-Men that everyone already owns.
