Hot take: The way some fans treat new readers at conventions is a real problem

I went to my local comic con last weekend and saw two different dudes basically grill a kid for not knowing the exact issue number where a villain first showed up. Made the whole vibe awkward. On the flip side, I get why long time fans get annoyed when someone acts like they know everything but don't. So which side are you on - do we gatekeep to keep quality high or let anyone in and risk losing the deep lore culture?

Wait, are we calling that gatekeeping though? In my experience that's just people being jerks, not protecting some deep lore culture. A kid asking a simple question doesn't threaten anything, just makes everyone look bad.

Nah @park.riley, you're totally right. If asking "what game is that" is enough to crack the foundation of some sacred hobby culture, then maybe the foundation was made of PAPER MACHE the whole time.
