I used to roll my eyes at variant cover collectors until last Wednesday at Midtown Comics
I was digging through the dollar bins at Midtown Comics on 38th St. looking for old John Byrne X-Men issues. Some kid next to me is flipping through a stack of variants from the 2015 Secret Wars run. I was about to make some snarky comment to my buddy. Then I see him pull out a Skottie Young Baby Thanos cover and go 'oh sick, I've been looking for this one for 3 months.' He was genuinely stoked. It hit me that I do the exact same thing when I find a beat up copy of X-Men 137 for cheap. The dude was buying what he liked, same as me. Guess I was just gatekeeping for no reason. Anyone else have that moment where you realized you were being a snob about other people's collections?

My buddy did the same thing last week when he found a foil cover he'd been chasing for like a year.

I read somewhere that some of those foil covers from the early 2000s are actually worth double what they were a few years ago. It's funny how people will hang onto a card for over a decade just hoping it goes up.
