My friend keeps calling the MCU 'Marvel Universe' and it drives me nuts

I was at a party last month and my friend was talking about the 'Marvel Universe' movies. He meant the MCU, the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It matters because the 'Marvel Universe' is the whole comics world, not just the movies. I had to pull up a wiki page on my phone to show him the difference. Does anyone else have friends who mix up comic and movie terms?

Totally get the "Marvel Universe" thing. It's like when people call every game console a Nintendo. You see this everywhere now, where the popular movie or show version becomes the only version people know. The specific details get lost because the big screen version is all they've seen. It makes explaining the original comics or games feel like you're teaching a history lesson.

Push back on this a little, @brooke475, because I actually think the movie/TV versions can make people more curious about the original stuff. Like, my nephew watched the Avengers movies and then went and bought a whole run of old Iron Man comics on eBay. That never would have happened without the big screen version sparking his interest. The "history lesson" part only kicks in when people act like the new version is the only valid one, you know? But if someone's using the popular version as a stepping stone, it's more like a bridge than a lesson.
