My uncle's 'read the credits first' advice saved me from a huge spoiler last week

So my uncle who's been collecting since the 80s told me years ago to always flip to the back of a new issue and check the credits before reading. I always thought that was super weird. But last week I grabbed issue #47 of a series I'm binging and there was a new artist listed it said 'special guest appearance by' on the splash page. I almost flipped back to the start but I didn't. So if I'd started reading I would've seen that guest before the story revealed it. That would've ruined the whole payoff. Anyone else got weird habits from older collectors that actually work out? What's yours?

Laugh at myself every time I do this, but my buddy who's been reading since before I was born told me to check the "next issue" blurb at the end first. Sounds backwards, right? But now I flip to that last page before anything else, and it gives me just enough context to spot twists coming without actually spoiling them. I've dodged so many "shocking" deaths that way, plus it's a fun guessing game of trying to figure out how the story gets there. My process looks insane to anyone watching, but it's paid off way more than it's backfired. Once it backfired hard though, I read a blurb that literally said "the hero dies next issue" and I spent the whole week mad at my buddy.
