Random kid at the comic shop made me rethink my pull list

This maybe 12 year old kid said 'why do you buy the same 5 books every month if you hate 3 of them?' Right out of nowhere. Made me realize I've been collecting out of habit for like 2 years. Anybody else get called out like that?

Oh come on, that kid doesn't get it at all. Habits are part of being a collector, they're not some bad thing you need to break. I've been buying the same Batman book for like 8 years even though I roll my eyes at half the issues. It's my routine, you know? Walking into the shop on Wednesday, grabbing that familiar cover, it feels right even when I complain about it later. Plus if I dropped the ones I complain about, I'd lose the whole ritual of complaining with the guy at the counter. That kid probably never had a long running pull list, they don't understand the comfort of griping about your own bad choices.

I used to be the guy saying "just drop it if you hate it" until I read your bit about losing the ritual of complaining with the guy at the counter... that actually hit me hard. I had this long run on Amazing Spider-Man for years and I'd complain every month but I never realized how much I'd miss that back and forth with my shop owner if I quit. We'd trade eye rolls and make jokes about the same tired plots and it became part of my Wednesday just like grabbing coffee. Now I get it, the habit is the whole point and the griping is just the flavor that makes it yours. You kinda changed my whole outlook on why I keep buying stuff I'm lukewarm on... appreciate you writing that out.
