Rant: I think the 'no spoilers ever' rule at my local shop is actually hurting new readers

Last week at the Wednesday new comics release, a guy at my shop in Portland was asking about a big event book from three years ago. He was trying to figure out if he should start reading it. Another regular started to explain the basic setup, and the store owner cut him off with a sharp 'No spoilers, man, let him find out.' I get the idea, but this happens all the time now. I saw that same new guy walk out without buying anything because he was too confused. Back in 2021, before this rule got so strict, people would chat and actually explain the hooks of old stories. It helped me get into a bunch of stuff. Now it feels like a library where you can't ask what a book is about. How are people supposed to get into decades of stories if we can't even talk about the basic premise of a three-year-old comic? Has anyone else's shop gotten like this?

That store owner in Portland is doing the right thing. The magic of a story is in the discovery, and even a basic setup can ruin a big twist or character moment. I got the ending of a major arc spoiled for me once by someone just trying to be helpful, and it totally killed my drive to read it. Letting someone walk out confused is better than robbing them of the real experience. They can always look up a spoiler-free summary online if they're that unsure. The shop should be a safe space where your next read isn't ruined before you even buy it.

Portland's a big comics town, so that rule must really hurt business. I see what @emery356 is saying about a safe space, but how is a total info blackout helping anyone? If you can't describe the core idea of a three-year-old event, you're basically telling new readers to just google it instead of talking to real people in the shop. That kills the whole community vibe. The owner is protecting a twist for one person but losing a customer forever.

My old shop in Seattle had a one year spoiler limit that worked pretty well.
