Spent 3 hours tracking down a missing variant cover in a longbox at my LCS

Last Saturday I was digging through a stack of longboxes at my local shop looking for a specific Frank Miller variant from 2015. The guy behind the counter swore they had it but nobody could find it for over an hour. Turns out it was misfiled under 'M' for Miller instead of 'D' for Daredevil, which ate up my whole afternoon. Has anyone else had a store misplace a key issue and take forever to locate it?

Miller, huh. That reminds me of a time at a shop in Portland where they had an entire longbox labeled "Various" that nobody ever touched. Turned out it was full of keys from the 90s that were filed wrong by some former employee who just gave up alphabetizing. I found a Newsstand copy of Amazing Spider-Man 361 buried in there once. My experience is that a lot of shops have these weird "misfile zones" that become accidental treasure piles. Might be worth asking your LCS if they have a similar catch-all box. You never know what else got stuck in there alongside your Miller variant.

You mentioned that "misfile zones" can accidentally become treasure piles, but in my experience those boxes also tend to be where employees dump random modern junk that nobody wants. How do you even start digging through one without wasting hours? Like, do you just pull out everything that looks 90s and pray, or is there some trick to spotting the good stuff before your back gives out? I've tried asking my shop about their misfile box and they acted like I was trying to steal their secrets or something. Makes me wonder if I should just show up with a folding chair and a stack of bag boards and offer to sort alphabetically in exchange for first dibs on anything weird.
