Picked bar joists over steel beams for a 40x60 shop in Ogden, and the crane bill told me I was right
Had to decide between open web bar joists and wide flange beams for the roof on a 40x60 retail shell in Ogden last fall. The steel guy quoted me $11,400 more for beams and told me joists would sag under the HVAC load, but the engineer's numbers said otherwise. Went with joists spaced at 6 feet, and we set the whole roof in one day with a smaller crane that saved us $3,800 on rental. Two winters in and no sag, no bounce, nothing. Anybody else getting pushed toward beams just out of habit?
