Serious question, why does nobody tape their roof jacks anymore?

I was on a job site in Nashville last Tuesday and watched a crew install 16 roof jacks without a single strip of tape. I told the foreman that's a leak waiting to happen and he just shrugged at me. Six days later the homeowner called because water was dripping through the ceiling in the break room. I had to go back and tape every single jack myself in the rain. Has anyone else run into this shortcut that always backfires?

I read somewhere that some roofing supply places are actually telling contractors the tape isn't needed because the rubber gaskets on the nails seal it up, which is just wrong. Saw a study from the NRCA a few years back where they tested unsealed jacks and something like 40% of them leaked in the first year, usually during heavy rain. The guy I sub for tried to skip tape on a big apartment complex and we were patching drips in the hallway for a week until the building owner made him go back and do it right.

40% of those jacks probably failed right where the nail bent under the flange too.
