Unpopular opinion: I stopped sweeping my cut stations and my blade life went UP
So about two months ago I was cutting a big rack of 1 5/8 strut for a mechanical room in a hospital out in Reno, and I was burning through cutoff wheels like crazy, like 4 or 5 in a single afternoon. Out of pure laziness one day I quit brushing the grit off my chop saw base between cuts and just let the pile build up. Weird thing is the wheels started lasting way longer, and I couldn't figure out why at first. Turns out the little pile of metal dust was acting like a cradle for the strut so it quit bouncing around while I cut, which kept the wheel from grabbing and chipping. I ran it that way for the rest of the job and went from 5 wheels a day down to maybe 2, which on a 6 week gig added up to real money on consumables. The super gave me a weird look when he saw the mess but I just pointed at my wheel count. So now I'm wondering, does anyone else let their cut station get ugly on purpose, or am I just getting lucky?
