4 years of diving wrong and a pool session fixed it in 10 minutes

I've been doing inland salvage work around the Port of Houston for about 4 years now. Every single dive I was fighting to stay level, adding weight after weight until I looked like a damn anchor. Last month a dive supervisor I was shadowing made me do a simple trim check in the training pool before we headed out to a barge job. Turns out I was wearing my tank strap too low and had my dump valve positioned completely wrong, so the air was always trapped at my feet. He adjusted one harness strap and suddenly I was floating neutral without touching anything. All those years of burning through air from flailing and constantly trying to kick myself upright, gone in a single adjustment. Anyone else had one of those embarrassing moments where a small gear setup change made you wonder how you ever passed your initial cert?
