Blew $400 on a fancy titanium dive knife that's been sitting in my truck for 8 months

I bought one of those high end titanium knives from a diving expo thinking it would last forever. First time underwater with it, I dropped it near a wreck in 60 feet of water and spent 20 minutes hunting for it in silt. Found it but it's got so many scratches I could've just used my old $40 stainless one. The titanium doesn't even hold an edge as good. Anyone else regret dropping cash on overpriced gear that doesn't perform better?

Ha! Yeah titanium is great... if you like soft metal that gets chewed up by a friendly wave. I've got a scratchy $400 letter opener in my garage too. My old beat up stainless Mora has outlasted like three of those "premium" knives. The real joke is you spent 20 minutes hunting for it in 60 feet of silt. I would've just let it become a permanent part of the wreck.

Hang on, don't you mean stainless steel instead of stainless? I think the term you're looking for is just stainless steel, not stainless. Stainless is a property, not a material. And I get what you're saying about the Mora, those things are tanks for the price. But I've got to disagree on the titanium softness thing. Pure titanium is soft yeah, but the alloy they use in most dive knives is actually pretty hard. It's more about the edge geometry than the metal itself. A thin titanium blade will roll before a thick chunk of stainless, but thats just physics not a flaw.
