Full-face masks used to scare me, now I won't dive without one

Three years back I did a harbor job in Norfolk and the comms box kept cutting out. I was on a surface air setup with a regular band mask, and every time the radio died I had to pull the reg and bang on the glass. That got old fast, so I borrowed a full-face mask from another crew for the next shift. The difference was night and day, I could talk to the tender without stopping work, and my ears didn't ring from pressure changes. I still thought they were overpriced until I did a 6 week pipeline inspection gig where we had to communicate every valve turn. That job paid for the mask twice over, and my neck stopped cramping because I wasn't turning my head to see signals. Now I tell every diver starting out to try one before they buy a third backup reg. Has anyone else switched and found it hard to go back to standard masks on shallow work?
