Old dive supervisor's tape trick was exactly right

Last month on a pier job in Portland, my umbilical kept snagging on a barnacle-encrusted piling. My supervisor, a guy with 30 years in, told me to wrap a few layers of duct tape around the hose where it bends. I thought it was nonsense, figured it would just peel off in the water. After three dives and zero snags, I get it now, the tape adds just enough stiffness to stop the kink. Anyone else use tape on umbilical bends or do you swear by something else?
