Rant: I used to trust a single gauge for my surface-supplied air, but after a buddy's gear failed at 80 feet in the Gulf last month, I now cross-check with a secondary pressure monitor before every dive.

Has anyone else started running a backup air check, or am I just being paranoid now?

OH MAN, I had a similar scare but with a different kind of gear! Last summer I was out on the lake in my buddy's old fishing boat and his depth finder started going haywire at like 30 feet. The numbers were jumping all over the place, showing 10 feet then 50 feet then back again. It freaked me out because I was sure we were gonna hit a sandbar or something. Turns out his battery terminals were just corroded as all get out. He'd been using the same unit for like 6 years without ever checking the connection. Now I double check the battery clamps on EVERYTHING before we go out, even the trolling motor.

My dive computer has a built-in pressure sensor that's always been solid.

What brand do you have? Mine's been reliable too.
