Squeezed through a restriction in the Gulf and learned my depth gauge was lying

Worked a job off Venice, LA last month on a platform leg inspection. Current was ripping harder than the forecast said, maybe 2 knots. I'm doing a swim around a cross brace and my depth gauge reads 85 feet but I can feel the mud line getting closer with every kick. Turned out the gauge was off by 12 feet because the battery died and it defaulted to a bad calibration. I ended up pushing through a tight gap between the brace and the bottom, got my hose snagged on an old cable for about 20 seconds before I could wiggle free. Scariest part was my tender couldn't hear me clear over the comms because of the current noise. I surfaced, swapped the battery, checked the calibration against the downline, and went back down to finish. Now I check the gauge against the air depth every single dive before I leave the bell. Has anyone else had a depth gauge go silent or drift on them mid job? How do you catch it before it bites you?
